LUCKY MOFFAT-CROSS (March 1, 1990, to August 25, 1998)

Lucky was an extraordinary gift given to us in July of 1990, when we found her as an abused and scarred 4 month old pup abandoned on the Trans-Canada Highway between Banff and Calgary, Alberta. As she came to us as we called her from the highway we knew instantly that we would be a threesome .... particularly as we looked into those soulful eyes of hers. We and the veterinarians nursed Lucky back to health and the bond that had developed strengthened even more with the trials she was to endure in the last five years of her short 8 1/2 years on earth.

When she was 3 1/2 years old a soft tissue cancer developed in the scar tissue on the top of her head. Surgery was done to remove this, but the cancer returned and surgery was required a second time. Lucky needed radiation therapy if she was to have any chance of survival, and as this was not available in Canada at that time, we headed to the Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Fort Collins, Colorado on April 4, 1994. Lucky sailed through 15 radiation treatments over a 3 week period, and we took her back to Colorado for her annual post-cancer screenings and follow-up treatments for some after-affects of the radiation therapy, including a hair transplant for which she became quite well-known. In 1998 her cancer returned, and unfortunately we were unable to do anything other than keep her comfortable for as long as we could ensure her a good quality of life. Jennifer Stelfox came to our cottage on August 25 of 1998 to help us say our final good-byes to one of the most precious gifts God could have given us. Lucky's unqualified love and trust, joy of and zest for life taught us many things - but most of all, she taught us that miracles can and do come in small furry packages when you least expect them, and this beloved miracle named Lucky will be with us in our hearts forever. God Bless.
